Stanley in Congo Today

The mighty have fallen and in this case it’s Henry Morton Stanley whose statue lies behind me. In 1970 the statue stood overlooking the Congo River from one of Kinshasa’s highest hills. Today, the “Breaker of Rocks”, as Stanley was known to his many Congolese porters, is unlikely to be restored or rehabilitated but he is just too big to put away in the warehouse of the national museum so he lies outside one of the exhibit halls.
